Brent Jumps to One-Month High Amid Houthi Escalation in the Red Sea
Brent crude rises to its highest level in a month following new Houthi attacks on a tanker in the Red Sea. Shipping companies' concerns are escalating over the expanding targeting area near Bab al-Mandab.

The price of Brent crude rose to its highest level in a full month, recording around $116.72 per barrel according to data from agencies specialized in energy markets, after Houthi forces announced targeting an additional oil tanker off the coast of Yemen. The rise came as part of an ongoing wave of escalation witnessed along navigation routes in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait for days.
Maritime shipping sector sources explained that the latest attack follows a series of reciprocal strikes between Houthi forces and Saudi forces, which included targeting oil facilities and fuel depots near Riyadh. This escalation led to a noticeable increase in the number of ships avoiding transit through the Red Sea, preferring the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope.
In light of these risks, marine insurance companies sharply raised their premiums on vessels transiting the region, while international maritime bodies warned that continued attacks could raise global shipping costs and delay energy shipments reaching Europe and Asia at a time when markets are experiencing additional tension due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz east of the Arabian Gulf.
In a related context, the European Parliament called for designating the Houthi group as a terrorist organization and tightening control over its funding sources, in a step that could pave the way for broader sanctions targeting smuggling networks supplying the group with weapons, according to official European reports.
