Taiwan Criminalizes Export of AI Chips to China

Taiwanese Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin stated that Taiwan will add AI servers and the latest semiconductors to its list of controlled goods, as part of a trade deal with the United States.

He explained in an interview with Bloomberg News that shipping these restricted devices to China without a permit will become a criminal offense under the Foreign Trade Act.

These commitments came under the "Reciprocal Trade Agreement" signed between the United States and Taiwan.

Kung conducted the interview on October 12 and did not specify a date for when the new rules would take effect.

What do these terms mean?

Semiconductors: Electronic chips made from semiconductor materials that power devices ranging from phones to AI servers.

Foreign Trade Act: Legislation regulating the export and import of goods; the new law criminalizes the shipment of restricted devices without a license.

Reciprocal Trade Agreement: An agreement between the United States and Taiwan regulating trade tariffs and obligations between them.
