Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs confirmed it is drafting a package of export controls under the US-Taiwan reciprocal trade agreement and the Trade Act, aimed at subjecting advanced chips and high-end technology goods to export controls.

According to the ministry, the package covers shipments to China, and Taiwan seeks through it to align with the US foreign direct product rule.

The Economics Committee of the Legislative Yuan held a public hearing on the draft articles 13-2 and 23-3 of the Trade Act as part of the discussion of the package.

Officials later explained that the first wave of controls would not include machine tools or general machinery.

What do these terms mean?

Export controls: Restrictions a state imposes on the sale of certain goods or technologies to specific countries or entities, requiring prior licensing.

Foreign direct product rule: A US rule extending restrictions to foreign products made using US technology or software.

Trade Act: The law regulating foreign trade and export- and import-related controls in Taiwan.
