European governments and private sector investors have allocated over 120 billion euros for offshore wind power projects this year, according to data from the WindEurope group, a record figure that far exceeds annual investments for any previous year, driven by the energy independence agenda whose priority has escalated in European policy.

Britain, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands lead the list of the most active countries in launching auctions for offshore wind power projects, while major energy companies such as Ørsted, Vestas, and Siemens Gamesa are engaged in a fierce race to secure stakes in these projects. Reports indicated that order books at major turbine suppliers extend for years to come.

However, the sector is not without challenges; supply chains are suffering from severe pressures represented by a shortage of specialized talent and rising costs of steel and critical minerals used in turbines. Reports noted that some projects experienced delivery delays and budget overruns as a result of these constraints.

In terms of overall capacity, planned projects are expected to add production capacity exceeding 45 gigawatts by 2030, theoretically enough to supply more than 40 million European homes with electricity, according to estimates by the European Environment Agency.

What do these terms mean?

Offshore wind power: Wind turbines installed at sea where winds are stronger and more consistent — more expensive to install than their onshore counterparts, but their output is higher and more stable, making them preferred for major projects.

Renewable energy auctions: A competitive mechanism in which governments put renewable energy projects up for bid, and companies that offer to build and sell power at the lowest price win — contributing to continuously lowering renewable energy costs.

Critical minerals for wind power: Essential raw materials for manufacturing wind turbines, such as neodymium and dysprosium used in permanent magnets — most of which come from China, creating a risk of supply chain disruption.
