California port watchmen strike deadline extended to November 4

The deadline for a possible strike by about 250 port watchmen at Los Angeles and Long Beach was extended to November 4, according to FreightWaves, while Reuters, citing Baird, said talks would continue through November 5.

FreightWaves reported that the new deadline ends at 5 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday, November 4.

The terminals where the watchmen work handle about 85% of Long Beach cargo and 33% of Los Angeles cargo, according to the report, meaning any work stoppage could disrupt the movement of goods at two vital ports.

Operators are watching the outcome of the talks, because any work stoppage could add delays to supply chains.

What do these terms mean?

Port watchmen: workers who carry out security-related duties at port terminals, including gate and cargo watch.

Strike: a collective work stoppage by a group of workers to press demands in labour negotiations.

Supply chain: the sequence of stages goods pass through from the factory until they reach the consumer.
