12 Countries Launch Their National Digital Currencies in 2026, Redefining the Future of the Banking System

Twelve countries officially launched their national digital currencies during 2026, in the world's largest wave of central bank digital currency rollouts, led by nations in Southeast Asia, the Arabian Gulf, and Africa.

China emerged at the forefront of this race as it expanded the use of the digital yuan to include cross-border transactions with three Asian countries, while the UAE and Bahrain announced the official transition to retail digital models in their banking systems.

In contrast, the digital euro faced mounting privacy-related criticism from the European Parliament, prompting the European Commission to postpone the full launch until early 2027, while the United States continues its preliminary studies without announcing a specific launch date.

Industry experts warn that the widespread adoption of central bank digital currencies could reduce deposits in commercial banks, weakening their lending capacity and constraining their business models—a phenomenon now known as bank disintermediation risks.
