"Jais 3": UAE Launches 6 Open Arabic Models Reaching Up to 375 Billion Parameters

The Institute of Foundational Models at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and UAE-based Inception 42 announced the launch of the "Jais 3" family, comprising six open-source Arabic language models with sizes ranging between 900 million and 375 billion parameters, as reported by WIRED Middle East.

The source added that the family includes "Jais Speech", a speech recognition model covering Modern Standard Arabic and spoken dialects across 19 Arab countries, expanding its use in voice applications, government, and commercial services.

The models were developed in collaboration with Cerebras Systems and were designed to handle code-switching mid-sentence, a feature frequently appearing in Arab speech where Arabic and English are mixed.

The WIRED report notes that the benchmark results announced by the company are self-reported by the developers themselves, meaning they have not yet undergone independent third-party verification.

What do these terms mean?

Open-source model: An artificial intelligence model whose code is made available to everyone for inspection, use, and modification without strict commercial restrictions.

Parameter: Numerical values within the model that are adjusted during training; the higher their count, the greater the model's capacity to process complex tasks.

Speech recognition: A technology that converts spoken audio into written text, used in voice assistants and customer service.
