OPEC+ Extends Oil Production Cuts Until End of 2025 to Maintain Prices

OPEC+ countries extended their voluntary production cuts of 2.2 million barrels per day until the end of December 2025, in a decision taken during the group's latest virtual meeting, aiming to balance the market against declining global demand pressures.

Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman attributed this decision to the need to ensure "market stability and prevent sharp volatility," noting that the group will review its stance at the next meeting scheduled for July 2025.

The decision comes amid growing concerns of oversupply, as the United States raised its production to record levels exceeding 13 million barrels per day, while some member countries expressed concern over weak compliance with designated production quotas.

The International Energy Agency expects the Brent price to stabilize in the range of $75-$85 during the second half of 2025 if the group successfully implements the announced cuts. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Iraq collectively pump about 60% of total OPEC+ production, making the group's decisions directly impactful on their budgets and government spending programs.

What do these terms mean?

OPEC+: An alliance of 23 oil-producing countries led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, aiming to coordinate oil production to maintain prices at acceptable levels. "Plus" refers to countries that joined outside the original OPEC, such as Russia, Kazakhstan, and others.

Voluntary Production Cuts: A decision voluntarily taken by countries to reduce the amounts of oil they pump into the market to raise its prices or prevent their collapse. As supply decreases while demand remains constant, the price rises. This is the logic upon which OPEC relies in managing the market.

Brent Crude: A type of crude oil extracted from the North Sea and used as a global benchmark for oil pricing. When you hear "today's oil price" in the news, they are usually talking about the Brent price, which directly affects the revenues of Gulf countries.
