Egypt Reaches 9.5 GW of Renewable Energy, Targeting 11.2 GW by End of 2026
Egypt's installed renewable energy capacity has reached 9.5 GW, with the government aiming to raise it to 11.2 GW by the end of 2026 as part of its energy diversification strategy.

Egypt's installed renewable energy generation capacity has reached 9.5 GW, signaling an acceleration in the country's energy transition as part of its strategy to diversify electricity sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The Egyptian government aims to increase this capacity to 11.2 GW by the end of 2026, relying on solar and wind power projects under construction in the Benban region of Aswan and Gabal El Zeit on the Red Sea, in addition to distributed solar plants across several governorates.
Reaching this level allows Egypt to reshape its energy export profile, particularly within the framework of the 3,000 MW electrical interconnection project with Saudi Arabia, as electricity generated from Egyptian renewable sources will form a core part of the exported energy.
Egypt continues to attract international investments in the renewable energy sector, including major agreements with European companies in green hydrogen and solar energy, indicating that the upward trajectory in installed capacity will continue beyond the 2026 targets.
What do these terms mean?
**Gigawatt (GW):** A unit of power generation capacity equal to one thousand megawatts; 9.5 GW is theoretically capable of supplying around 7 million homes with electricity simultaneously.
**Installed Capacity:** The total maximum power that generating stations can produce at once under ideal conditions, which differs from actual generated energy that is affected by factors such as wind speed and sunlight.
