Saudi Arabia Informs OPEC of Oil Production Drop to Lowest Level Since 1990

Saudi Arabia has reportedly informed OPEC that its crude oil production dropped to its lowest level since 1990, following damage to energy infrastructure and accompanying disruptions in export traffic.

This decline is classified among the steepest in over three decades, coming at a highly sensitive time for global oil markets that are already suffering from supply-side pressures. The Saudi Ministry of Energy has not confirmed the exact production figures as of the publication of this report.

Saudi Arabia leads the OPEC+ alliance, which brings together major producing countries outside the organization, and its production quota forms an essential cornerstone of the group's plans to balance markets. Analysts believe that the continuation of this decline could force the organization to reconsider the mechanisms for distributing production quotas among its members.

The Kingdom had gradually increased its production in recent years following strict cuts imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, making the current setback all the more impactful on market expectations that had bet on the stability of Saudi supplies for the remainder of the year.

What do these terms mean?

**OPEC:** Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, comprising 13 oil-producing nations that coordinate their production policies to influence global oil prices.

**Production Quotas:** Caps under which the quantities that each member state is entitled to pump into the market are determined, used as a primary tool to control the pace of prices.
