US Proposes $200,000 Fee on Spanish Ships

The US Federal Maritime Commission proposed on October 14, 2026, imposing a $200,000 fee per voyage on Spanish-flagged vessels calling at United States ports, according to a report by Xinhua's Spanish service.

The proposal also includes restrictions on Spanish imports, including perfumes, cosmetics, oils and fats, ceramics, stone manufactures, and sugar products.

The commission's investigation concluded with conclusive evidence that Spain blocked US-flagged vessels carrying military shipments to Israel, prompting the commission to take these measures.

The proposals were opened for a 60-day public comment period before the commission issues its final decision, a standard procedure in US commercial and regulatory matters.

What do these terms mean?

US Federal Maritime Commission: An agency that regulates maritime trade and monitors access conditions for vessels to US ports.

Voyage fee: An additional charge imposed on each maritime voyage entering a country's ports, aimed at altering the behavior of shipping companies.

Public comment period: A timeframe allowing the public and businesses to submit feedback before a final decision is adopted.
