BAE Systems Develops Terminals for US Space Force

BAE Systems has won a contract from the U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command to design and develop ultra-compact radio frequency terminals for a space data layer, according to a statement released by the company and reported by the EuropaWire platform.

The terminals rely on a family of space-hardened software-defined radios and are designed to operate between low Earth orbit and geostationary orbit, resisting jamming, electromagnetic interference, and radiation.

The company did not disclose the value of the contract awarded by the Space Systems Command.

Joe Dziedzinski, product line director for space systems at the company, said these capabilities will enable "rapid deployment and scalable production."

What do these terms mean?

RF Terminal: A device that transmits and receives signals between a satellite and Earth, or between satellites themselves.

Software-Defined Radio (SDR): A radio device whose functions are changed via software instead of fixed circuits.

Jamming: Transmitting intentional signals to disrupt wireless communication between devices.
