Why Are Websites Closing Their Doors to AI Agents?

AI companies are facing a growing problem with the proliferation of their agents: popular websites have begun preventing these programs from completing tasks on behalf of users. According to a report by The Verge, users of platforms such as Meta's Muse, xAI's Grok, OpenAI's Dots, and Instinct reported blocks preventing their agents from completing tasks on major websites.

Yelp says it only allows agents that pay for its data licensing program, while Delta prevents ticket booking via agents, and JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab confirmed blocking account access for security reasons. Users note that websites like Cars.com and Amtrak previously worked with their agents but stopped, suggesting that other companies may be quietly blocking access.

The roots of the dispute trace back to Amazon's battle with Perplexity after it banned the agentic shopping feature and sued the company. A judge ordered Perplexity to halt its agents, but an appeals court overturned the ruling in August before Amazon filed an amended complaint. Chris Canal, CEO of AI security evaluation firm EquiStamp, stated that blocking reduces the actual value of these agents because their core promise is to accomplish what a human can do on the internet.

In contrast, some companies are trying to bypass the blockage through partnership rather than confrontation. Meta stated that "rejecting a personal agent means rejecting the customer behind it," and signed agreements with retailers like Walmart, Gap, Sephora, and Best Buy, while Shopify opened its stores to agents. The report adds that anti-bot systems, including Cloudflare tools, are also contributing to closing doors, which could make web browsing more annoying as human verification tests increase.

What do these terms mean?

AI Agent: A program that operates on behalf of the user and automatically performs multiple steps, such as searching for a product, completing a booking, or managing an account.

Data Licensing: An agreement granting a party the right to use data from a website or platform in exchange for financial payment, used here to distinguish agents permitted access.

Web Crawlers: Programs that automatically collect website pages, used by search engines and AI tools, which websites may block to protect their data.
