NERC Approves Reliability Standards for AI Data Centers

Stakeholders at the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) approved new reliability standards for artificial intelligence data centers, cryptocurrency mining facilities, and other computing loads, in a final vote whose results were announced on October 15, 2026.

The standards now move to NERC's Board of Trustees for a vote, and then to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for final approval. The rules are based on a Level 3 Alert issued by the corporation in May following incidents involving data centers abruptly shedding loads or rapidly reversing demand, threatening the stability of regional grids.

The standards aim to establish requirements for reliably integrating large computing loads into the bulk power system, including interconnection and modeling studies, operational and communications data, load protection and coordination, and disturbance monitoring. They apply to computing loads of 50 MW or more connecting at a voltage level of 100 kV or higher.

NERC projects summer peak demand across the bulk power system to rise by 224 GW over the next ten years, a 24% increase compared to the 2025 peak, driven largely by data centers. The corporation stated that these loads are "reshaping the demand profile and exposing reliability gaps" in planning and operations, with the Board of Trustees expected to consider the standards during the fourth quarter.

What Do These Terms Mean?

NERC: A non-profit organization that oversees the reliability of North American power grids and sets standards with which electric utilities comply.

Computing Load: The amount of electricity consumed by a data center, mining facility, or any large computing setup during operation.

Bulk Power System: The high-voltage transmission network connecting generation plants to broad load centers, subject to unified reliability standards.

FERC: The federal regulatory agency responsible for overseeing power transmission and wholesale electricity sales in the United States.
