EU Advocate General Backs TikTok Gatekeeper Designation
An Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union deemed TikTok's designation as a "gatekeeper" under the Digital Markets Act to be valid, calling for ByteDance's appeal to be rejected.

Advocate General Andrea Biondi at the Court of Justice of the European Union called for rejecting the appeal filed by ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, in case C-627/24 P, as reported by Insurance Journal via Reuters.
The Advocate General supported the ruling issued by the General Court in 2024, which upheld TikTok's designation as a "gatekeeper" under the EU Digital Markets Act.
The Advocate General stated that the use of other social networks does not in itself mean TikTok is not an important gateway connecting users to businesses, an argument relied upon by the appellant.
The judges' ruling is expected in the coming months, at a time when fines for violations of the Digital Markets Act could reach up to 10% of the company's global annual turnover.
