Rocket Lab Postpones Neutron Launch to 2027 Following Fuel Tank Defect

US company Rocket Lab announced in a regulatory disclosure and investor statement issued on October 14 that the maiden flight of its new Neutron rocket has been postponed from the fourth quarter of this year to 2027.

The delay comes after an inspection of the composite carbon fiber forward dome of the first-stage fuel tank revealed voids between fiber layers, a flaw affecting the integrity of the tank.

Company CEO Peter Beck stated that the defect was fixed and the manufacturing process was altered, but manufacturing a replacement dome and completing qualification tests will not be finished before the first quarter of 2027.

In market reaction, Rocket Lab shares traded at $52.54, down 11.20% at 1:04 PM New York time, compared to a previous close of $59.18, while another data source showed $53.29, down 9.95%, extending the stock's year-to-date decline.

What do these terms mean?

Neutron: A medium-lift rocket developed by Rocket Lab, larger than its current rocket, designed to launch larger satellites.

Composite Forward Dome: The curved upper portion of the fuel tank, made from bonded layers of carbon fiber, where any defect between layers weakens the tank's strength.

8-K Filing: A mandatory report submitted by US publicly listed companies to the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding any significant event that could affect the stock price.

Qualification Tests: A series of tests ensuring that a rocket part or system operates safely under actual conditions before being cleared for flight.
