China and Abu Dhabi Win $2.7 Billion Contract for Al Maktoum Airport

Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects awarded the substructure contract for the Western Terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, valued at AED 10 billion ($2.7 billion), to a joint venture comprising China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and Abu Dhabi-based Tristar Engineering & Construction.

The Western Terminal will span an area of 800,000 square meters across seven floors, accommodating 45 million passengers annually.

Executing entities stated that the award moves the first phase of the airport's $35 billion expansion into the main construction phase.

In a separate contract, an automated people mover system project valued at approximately $1.5 billion was awarded to a consortium comprising Mitsubishi and Larsen & Toubro.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Substructure: The primary structural portion of a building that supports the remaining floors, typically completed before the construction of facades and fit-outs.

Joint Venture: An agreement between two or more companies to execute a single project and share profits and risks instead of a single company carrying it out alone.

Automated People Mover: A light rail or automated transit system that transports passengers between airport terminals and buildings without leaving the facility.
