8 US States Sue OpenAI Over Allegations of Harming Users

Attorneys general in eight US states (Iowa, Kansas, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia) have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, according to Al Jazeera.

The lawsuit accused the ChatGPT model of harming residents of these states, including teenagers, and violating consumer protection laws by misleading users about its level of safety.

The plaintiffs are demanding changes to how ChatGPT operates, along with prohibiting the development of self-improving models until their safety and alignment with required standards are ensured.

The state of Florida filed the first lawsuit of this kind last June, reflecting escalating legal pressure on artificial intelligence companies in the United States.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Attorney General: The chief legal officer in the state, supervising civil and criminal prosecutions to protect residents.

Self-Improving Model: A model capable of modifying its code or self-training, raising concerns over the loss of human control.

Alignment: Ensuring the model's behavior aligns with institutional, societal, and safety values rather than pursuing a goal by any means necessary.
