Space experts have observed an unusual movement by a Russian military satellite that approached within a few kilometers of a radar satellite belonging to the Finnish company ICEYE, which provides imagery to Ukraine and Western governments, according to the Kyiv Post citing Axios.

According to an analysis by orbital tracking company LeoLabs, the Russian satellite "Cosmos 2612" reduced the distance separating it from the "ICEYE X36" satellite from about 320 kilometers to around 5 kilometers in less than 24 hours.

Independent expert Marco Langbroek stated that the two satellites were at a distance of between 1 and 2 kilometers until 18:15 GMT on October 17, warning that the move could potentially be an in-orbit anti-satellite attempt.

Unidentified U.S. officials told Axios that the close approach is unacceptable and poses a threat, especially since the objects travel at speeds approaching 27,000 kilometers per hour, meaning any error could lead to a catastrophic collision. So far, no evidence of hostile Russian intent has emerged, according to the Kyiv Post.
