Brazilian Court Orders Meta to Ensure Equal Treatment for Lula and Bolsonaro Campaigns
Brazil's electoral court upheld a ruling compelling Meta to provide identical treatment to the campaigns of Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro until the runoff on October 25, under a daily fine of 500,000 reais.

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court upheld a decision requiring Meta to apply identical treatment to the campaigns of President Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro until the runoff scheduled for October 25.
The decision covers content distribution, search results, and metrics, imposing a daily fine of 500,000 Brazilian reais in case of non-compliance, and requiring Meta to restore paid promotions that were not delivered by October 21.
The court also obligates the platform to provide a human review of ad account restrictions within two hours, after Meta acknowledged technical glitches but denied any political targeting.
In the same context, the Brazilian Ministry of Justice recommended referring the case file to the Public Prosecutor's Office to file a public civil action, and forwarded it to the Data Protection Authority, citing potential violations of the Civil Rights Framework for the Internet and the General Data Protection Law.
What do these terms mean?
Runoff round: The final electoral round in which the top two candidates compete to secure the office.
Identical treatment: That the platform accords each campaign the same treatment in distribution, visibility, and metrics without discrimination.
Paid promotion: A paid advertisement displayed by the platform to a wider audience in exchange for a fee.
