IMF Managing Director Warns of 'Negative Repercussions for Everyone' Due to Developments in Saudi Arabia
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that developments in Saudi Arabia could have 'negative repercussions for everyone', and praised the Gulf's ability to absorb shocks.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated that developments in Saudi Arabia could have "negative repercussions for everyone everywhere," during a briefing on the global policy agenda at the 2026 Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group in Bangkok.
Georgieva praised Saudi Arabia's leadership for driving structural reforms in recent years, highlighting the resilience of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including diversification efforts and non-oil sector growth before and after the conflict, noting that this "created buffers that are now paying off significantly for the authorities and populations in the Gulf."
Earlier this month, Georgieva said the impact of the regional war was significant in reversing the region's growth trajectory, as the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea disruptions severely curtailed oil and gas exports, damage to energy facilities reduced production capacity, and non-oil activity was constrained by declining trade, weak business confidence, and rising commodity prices.
The remarks came on the sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group in Bangkok, which are held over six days and conclude on October 18 with the participation of representatives from 191 member countries alongside policymakers and journalists. The Fund confirmed in its latest report that the Saudi economy is more resilient to geopolitical instability than other economies in the region, thanks to the diversification of energy export routes.
