Canada Launches $1.75 Billion Package to Fund Startups and Growth

The Canadian government unveiled details of a CAD 1.75 billion package to support the venture capital industry, including $750 million for an early-stage and growth investment strategy and $1 billion for the "Growth VCCI" initiative, according to BetaKit.

The government allocated $675 million of the first tranche to Series B and later growth-stage companies, compared to just $75 million for pre-seed and seed stages—a distribution that raised concerns among some investors about neglecting early-stage startups.

Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly announced the opening of expressions of interest for the "Growth VCCI" program, which includes $700 million for venture capital fund managers, $200 million for life sciences, and $100 million for emerging managers.

BetaKit estimates that it will take 12 to 18 months before the funds reach fund managers and startups, while the CVCA welcomed the package and urged swift implementation, at a time when investors fear the ongoing brain drain to the United States.
