Jet Fuel Nears Peak as Holiday Airfares Reach 10-Year High
The price of jet fuel in the US surpassed $4.75 per gallon, near its all-time high, driving Thanksgiving airfares up by around 30% and Christmas airfares by over 20%.

The average price of jet fuel in the United States surpassed $4.75 per gallon this week, approaching its all-time high and reaching nearly double its price from a year ago, according to price-tracking firm Argus. Hayley Berg, lead economist at travel company Hopper, said airfares are now at their highest level in a decade due to high fuel costs.
Berg explained that airlines are forced to pass higher fuel prices on to travelers through higher ticket prices. According to her data, Thanksgiving airfares rose about 30% compared to last year, while Christmas airfares increased by over 20%.
U.S. airlines say demand remains stable despite higher prices. Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said on an earnings call this month that consumers showed limited resistance to the increases and still view flying as relatively affordable. In Europe, Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary predicted ticket prices would rise between 10% and 20% next year, describing the expected increase as the largest in the continent's history over a 12-month period.
This means families planning holiday travel will face higher bills as companies try to balance fuel costs while maintaining demand. The question remains how much more travelers can absorb in additional increases before scaling back their travel plans, something airlines are watching closely ahead of next season's seat bookings.
