Egyptian Pound Drops Past 53 Per Dollar as US Currency Rises

The US dollar exchange rate surpassed the 53-pound level at the close of Wednesday's trading, according to "Ahram Online," in a new decline for the Egyptian pound that accompanied a global rise in the dollar following US inflation data.

Traders attribute the weakness of the pound to the strength of the US currency globally, a movement casting a shadow over emerging market currencies, without being accompanied by a change in the local interest rate.

The Central Bank of Egypt kept its interest rate at 19%, a high level aimed at curbing inflationary pressures and supporting the attractiveness of pound-denominated instruments, at a time when the International Monetary Fund raised its growth forecast for the Egyptian economy in the 2025/2026 fiscal year to 5.1% this week.

The weakness of the pound impacts the lives of Egyptians through the rising cost of imports and imported goods, making the prices of some basic commodities more vulnerable to dollar movements, while on the other hand increasing the attractiveness of exports and tourism.
