Riyadh Airport Resumes Operations, But Airlines Continue Flight Suspensions

King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh reopened on Sunday after a closure caused by attacks launched by the Houthis, according to UAE newspaper The National. Despite the airport resuming operations, many global airlines have not yet resumed their flights to the Saudi capital.

The newspaper stated that Etihad Airways flights between Abu Dhabi and Riyadh remain canceled through October 19, while Qatar Airways has not set a date to resume its flights to Riyadh and Dammam.

In the same context, Cathay Pacific's suspension of its flights to Riyadh extends until January 31, 2027, while Delta Air Lines has postponed the launch of its Atlanta-Riyadh route to March 2027.

The continued suspension of flights directly impacts travelers to and from Saudi Arabia, with unclear resumption dates for some routes, prompting airlines to urge passengers to check flight schedules before booking their tickets.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Flight Suspension: A temporary stoppage of an air route due to security or operational conditions, which may be extended or lifted depending on evolving situations.

Air Route: A fixed path operated by an airline between two airports or cities, which can be suspended or rescheduled as needed.

Hub Airport: A major airport that an airline relies on as a point of assembly and distribution for its flights, through which passengers transfer between its various routes.
