OpenAI Announces Breaking Exponential Time Hypothesis and Presents Physics Result

OpenAI announced three discoveries it described as "major" in mathematics, computer science, and physics, less than a month after releasing hundreds of manuscripts it said contained solutions to long-standing mathematical problems, according to The Verge.

In mathematics, the company stated that its model produced a proof for the local smoothing of the Euclidean wave equation, using an auxiliary partial differential equation to prove Sogge's conjecture in all spatial dimensions starting from the second dimension, and also leading to the Kakeya maximal and dimension conjectures and Stein's spherical restriction estimates. The company published the model's output directly.

In computer science, a paper presented a deterministic algorithm that accurately computes truth assignments for fixed-width CNF formulas in sub-exponential time and polynomial space, refuting the Exponential Time Hypothesis in the case of 3-SAT. The company said an independent group of computer scientists led by Russell Impagliazzo, Ramamohan Paturi, and Ryan Williams will examine and clarify the proof.

In physics, OpenAI stated that the result consists of a mathematically rigorous existence proof for certain interacting quantum field theories containing gauge fields and fermions in four dimensions, including Quantum Chromodynamics and a unified model of particle physics. David Gross will lead a group to review the work, while the company considers a better way to release AI-generated scientific results.

What do these terms mean?

Exponential Time Hypothesis: A hypothesis stating that certain computational problems cannot be solved faster than an exponentially growing time, serving as a foundation for many hardness theories.

Local Smoothing: A mathematical property describing how wave energy is distributed in space, with connections to conjectures in harmonic analysis.

CNF Formulas: A logical representation consisting of "AND" conditions among groups of variables, used to represent problems in computer science.

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD): The theory describing the strong force between quarks and gluons inside protons and neutrons.
