Google Writes Positive-Only Review Summaries Inside Search Ads
Google is adding AI-generated summaries to search ads in four markets, limiting them to positive sentiment without giving advertisers an opt-out option.

Google published a help page describing AI-generated review summaries that appear inside search ads. The company stated that these summaries appear in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and India.
The summaries are extracted from reviews published across the web, are restricted to positive sentiment, and can appear in all placements on Google's site. The company excludes sensitive categories such as pharmaceuticals from these summaries.
Google documented that there is no opt-in, opt-out, or reporting mechanism, and advertisers cannot edit the summary text. This comes at a time when AI tools are expanding across search results and ads alike.
PPC News Feed reported spotting the help page on October 24. The documented text means that summaries appear to users without the advertiser playing a role in drafting them or selecting what is displayed from them.
What do these terms mean?
Search Ads: Paid advertisements that appear above or below search results when a user types specific keywords.
Reviews: Evaluations written by users about a product, service, or store after trying them.
Generative AI: A type of artificial intelligence that produces new text after being trained on large amounts of data.
Sentiment: The tone of the text toward positive or negative, used here to determine which reviews will appear in the summary.
