SoftBank Plans to Invest $50 Billion in AI in Malaysia
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim discussed with Masayoshi Son SoftBank's plan to invest $50 billion in artificial intelligence and data centers, without a signed commitment.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he discussed a plan to invest $50 billion in artificial intelligence and data centers in Malaysia with Masayoshi Son, founder and chairman of SoftBank, during a video call.
He explained that Son expressed interest in locations including Kuching in Sarawak state and areas in Peninsular Malaysia, as reported by ETDatacenters from Bloomberg.
He stated that the investment would be among the largest in the region, but he did not provide a timeline or details about funding. SoftBank has not announced a signed commitment, meaning the plan is still under discussion.
Malaysia attracted data center-related investments worth 385.7 billion ringgit, or about $94 billion, from 2021 through the first half of 2026, according to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).
What Do These Terms Mean?
Data Centers: Buildings housing servers, cooling systems, and networks to run digital services and train AI models.
Signed Commitment: A final agreement signed by the parties, not merely an announced plan or investment intention.
Ringgit: The national currency of Malaysia, usually represented by the symbol MYR.
MIDA: Malaysian Investment Development Authority, the government agency responsible for attracting and coordinating investments.
