Boursa Kuwait Drops Alongside the Region as Kuwait Petroleum Signs $16 Billion Deal

Boursa Kuwait's indices closed Wednesday's session lower in line with Gulf stock markets, as the Premier Market dropped 1.38% to 8,945.69 points, the Main Market fell 1.51% to 8,678.29 points, and the All-Share Index declined 1.40% to 8,533.60 points, according to the FANA news agency.

In a separate development, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation signed a $16 billion sale-and-leaseback deal for its oil pipeline network, a structure that allows the sale of the asset and leasing it back, providing immediate cash liquidity while continuing to use the network.

The corporation stated that Kuwait could restore 70% of its oil production within 6 to 8 weeks after the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, reflecting the extent of the impact that the waterway's disruption has had on supplies.

These two developments concern investors and the Kuwaiti economy, as the continued drop in the stock market reflects security concerns for the region, while the pipeline deal points to an effort to secure massive financing amidst ongoing uncertainty regarding production and exports.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Sale-and-leaseback: A structure in which a company sells an asset and then leases it back from the buyer, providing cash liquidity while continuing to use the asset.

Strait of Hormuz: A narrow waterway connecting the Gulf to the Sea of Oman, through which a significant portion of global oil exports passes.

Premier Market: One of Boursa Kuwait's markets, comprising the largest and most liquid companies.
