Wizz Air Negotiating to Acquire Landing Slots from Bankruptcy-Threatened Airlines

Wizz Air is negotiating with European airports to acquire landing slots from weaker airlines facing the prospect of bankruptcy this winter, according to Reuters.

The company is opening its first bases in Spain: Valencia on November 2 and Madrid on November 3.

The carrier is supporting 17 new winter routes, including its first domestic Spanish flights.

Owen Jones, the company's Head of Corporate Affairs, said during a speech at the World Aviation Festival in Lisbon that landing slot agreements are "part of our business."

What do these terms mean?

Landing slots: A specific time-limited right to use a runway or gate at a congested airport, which becomes highly valuable if relinquished by another operator.

Bankruptcy: When a company ceases paying its debts and is unable to continue operations, potentially freeing up its slots and fleet for competitors.

Winter route: A scheduled flight route for the winter season between two airports or cities, typically announced before the season begins.
