OpenAI Engineer Charged with Planting Audio Recorder in Meeting Room

The U.S. Department of Justice charged an OpenAI engineer named Abdulrahman Al-Fawzan (35) with planting a secret audio recorder in the company's executive meeting room, after it was found hidden in toilet paper on September 30, according to a report by "The Register" citing the department's complaint.

The employee was arrested on October 9 and appeared before a federal court on October 13, according to the complaint cited by the publication.

He faces charges of attempting to intercept oral communications, an offense punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to the same source.

OpenAI stated that it found no indications that the individual accessed or leaked model weights, source code, or customer data, adding that it terminated his employment, which points the charge toward an act of eavesdropping rather than a technical leak.

What do these terms mean?

Attempted Interception of Oral Communications: A charge related to attempting to eavesdrop on a conversation without the knowledge of the parties involved, regardless of whether it was actually recorded.

Department of Justice Complaint: A formal charging document filed by prosecutors with a court detailing the allegations and preliminary evidence.

Model Weights: The numerical values resulting from training an artificial intelligence model, which represent the core of its technical value.

Appeared in Court: The presence of the defendant at a formal court hearing where charges are read and their legal status is determined.
