Taiwan Blocks Grab from Acquiring Foodpanda for $600 Million

Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission has decided to block Grab's acquisition of Delivery Hero's food delivery business in Taiwan, "Foodpanda," in a $600 million cash deal, according to Reuters.

The commission stated that the harm the deal would inflict on competition outweighs its economic benefits, and that the commitments offered by both parties were insufficient to address competitive concerns.

Grab expressed disappointment with the decision, stating that it will focus on growing its business in the region. For its part, Delivery Hero pointed to contractual protections in the deal agreement, including a breakup fee.

The completion of the deal would have added Foodpanda's Taiwan business to Grab's footprint in the region, a step the company said it would offset by focusing on regional growth.

What do these terms mean?
