First Harmonized European Standard for the AI Act Comes Into Force

A European Implementing Decision numbered "(EU) 2026/2274" issued on October 12 listed standard "EN 18286:2026" as the first harmonized standard supporting the European AI Act, according to the Italian certification body "CSQA".

The standard specifies quality management system requirements that support Article 17 of the Act, which are requirements targeted at providers of high-risk AI systems.

The standard entered into force on October 14, and compliance with it is intended to confer a presumption of conformity with the requirements it covers.

However, compliance with the standard does not mean complete conformity with the Act, as the presumption of conformity is limited only to the requirements covered within it, according to the same source.

What do these terms mean?

Harmonized Standard: A technical specification officially adopted in the European Union; compliance with it gives a company a presumption that it conforms to the related law.

High-Risk AI Systems: Applications that may cause significant harm to individuals or their rights, subjecting them to the strictest regulatory requirements.

Presumption of Conformity: A legal presumption meaning that compliance with a specific standard is considered proof of conformity with the requirements it covers, while proof of the remaining requirements remains necessary.

Quality Management System: A set of procedures and controls within a company that ensures consistent quality of its products and documentation of its processes.
