Spanish Court Quashes €33.6 Million Tax Claim Against Tata Unit

Tata Communications announced that Spain's National Court has quashed a decision by the Central Economic-Administrative Tribunal (TEAC) that upheld a VAT claim and fine against its unit in Spain.

The claim comprises €15,505,607.73 in VAT and interest, plus a penalty of €18,102,272.48, bringing the total to approximately €33.6 million.

The company stated that the ruling is not final and remains subject to appeal. The case involves Tata Communications (Spain) S.L., a subsidiary of the group in the Spanish market.

This judicial step follows the review of an administrative decision demanding the aforementioned amount from the company, meaning the firm could avoid a liability of nearly €33.6 million if the ruling becomes final.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Value-Added Tax (VAT): A tax imposed on the value of goods and services at each stage of production and distribution, ultimately borne by the final consumer.

Tax Penalty: An additional amount imposed by the tax authority for violating rules or late payment.

Appeal: A request for a higher court to review a judicial ruling, which may stay execution of the ruling or modify it.
