BlackSky Expands Satellite Imagery Contract with International Defense Agency

US company BlackSky Technology announced on October 22 a "seven-figure" dollar contract to provide an international defense agency in a "disputed region" with assured access to Gen-3 high-resolution imagery and data, according to SpaceNews.

The contract represents an expansion of the previous "Gen-3 Assured" contract with the same agency, doubling the customer's subscription in less than six months, according to the platform, citing the company.

The company, headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, did not disclose the name of the client agency or the exact value of the contract, describing it only as "seven figures" in dollars.

Commercial high-resolution imagery is used for reconnaissance, infrastructure monitoring, and damage assessment alongside government satellites, making assured access contracts an important tool for defense entities.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Remote Sensing: Collecting imagery and data about the Earth's surface from space using instruments aboard satellites.

Assured Access: A contractual arrangement that guarantees the customer receives imagery and data at agreed-upon times rather than relying solely on available capacity.

Image Resolution: The size of the smallest detail that can be distinguished in a satellite image; the smaller it is, the clearer the image.
