UK Consumer Price Index Rises to 2.9% in July, Reaching Highest Level Since March
The UK Consumer Price Index recorded a rise to 2.9% in July 2026, marking the highest level since last March and strengthening arguments for keeping interest rates elevated.

The UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded a year-on-year rise to 2.9% in July 2026, marking the highest level since last March and reinforcing concerns over renewed inflationary pressures.
This figure exceeds the Bank of England's inflation target of 2%, casting a shadow over upcoming interest rate decisions and strengthening arguments for monetary policy hawks within the Monetary Policy Committee.
A combination of factors contributed to the rise, most notably persistent inflationary pressures in the services sector, rising housing rents, in addition to the impact of higher energy prices on final consumers.
These data indicate that the path of disinflation in the UK has not been linear, and that a sustainable return to the 2% target still requires a commitment to a cautious monetary policy for longer than optimists expected at the beginning of the year.
What Do These Terms Mean?
Consumer Price Index (CPI): A comprehensive measure of price changes in a basket of goods and services purchased by the average consumer, used as a key benchmark for inflation in most countries worldwide.
Services Sector Inflation: An increase in the prices of services such as restaurants, hotels, healthcare, and education, typically being more persistent and slower to decline compared to goods inflation due to its reliance on labor costs.
Inflation Target: The rate targeted by central banks for inflation, usually set at 2%; exceeding it serves as a reason to raise interest rates, while a sharp drop prompts rate cuts.
