Global Tourism: 690 Million Travelers Crossed Borders This Year

The World Tourism Organization stated that the number of cross-border arrivals has reached 690 million people so far this year, an increase of three million from last month, during a speech by its Secretary-General at the Global Tourism Economy Forum in Macao.

Shaikha Al Nowais emphasized that the sector's success should be measured by the value it creates for destinations and local communities, not by the number of visitors alone, calling for environmentally conscious growth that distributes its benefits fairly.

This increase comes as international travel recovers gradually from the impact of recent crises, with Asian and European demand returning to growth and emerging markets continuing to expand.

Observers believe that the rising figures signal increased competition among destinations to attract travelers and improve their experience, at a time when many countries are moving to modernize their airports and tourism services.

What do these terms mean?

International Arrivals: The number of travelers entering a country from abroad for tourism, business, or visitation purposes within a specified period.

World Tourism Organization (UNWTO): A United Nations specialized agency dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism and disseminating global industry data.
