EU Selects 46 Strategic Raw Materials Projects
The European Commission has selected 46 strategic raw material projects across 16 member states, with required investments estimated at approximately 21.1 billion euros.

The European Commission has selected 46 strategic raw material projects across 16 member states, in a move aimed at reducing the Union's reliance on external supplies of critical minerals.
The projects cover 15 out of 17 strategic materials in the European Union, including copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, and rare earths, according to Reuters as reported by Mining.com.au.
The Commission estimates that the projects require investments of around 21.1 billion euros and announced that it has mobilized more than 2 billion euros in public funding to support them.
The "strategic" status grants the projects faster permitting procedures, but it does not automatically guarantee funding, leaving governments and investors with the responsibility of securing the remaining financing.
What Do These Terms Mean?
Strategic Raw Materials: Minerals and materials essential for clean energy, technology, and defense industries, which are difficult to easily substitute.
Rare Earths: A group of 17 metals used in powerful magnets, electric vehicle batteries, and turbines.
Faster Permitting: Procedural facilitators that shorten government approval times to start projects.
Public Funding: Funds injected by governments or EU institutions to support projects of strategic importance.
