Panama Canal Increases Neopanamax Transits to 10 Daily and Draft to 14.94 Meters

The Panama Canal Authority announced an increase in Neopanamax class vessel transits through the locks to 10 ships per day starting October 15, 2026, bringing the total daily slots to 33.

The Authority raised the maximum allowable draft in the Neopanamax locks to 14.94 meters, equivalent to 49.0 feet, with the decision taking effect immediately until further notice.

The Authority attributed the decision to improved Gatun Lake water levels and water conservation measures, noting that the canal watershed still suffers from a water deficit.

The Panama Canal is a vital corridor for maritime trade between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Draft and transit restrictions over the past two years forced route changes for many ships, making the decision to raise limits an indicator of gradual improvement in navigation flow.

What do these terms mean?

"Neopanamax": A category of vessels suitable for the expanded locks in the Panama Canal, which are larger than traditional "Panamax" ships.

Draft: The distance between the waterline and the bottom of the ship, which determines the amount of cargo a ship can carry.

Gatun Lake: An artificial lake that supplies the canal with the water needed to raise and lower ships inside the locks.

Canal Watershed: The area where rainwater collects to feed the canal, and its level decreases during drought years.
