IMF Warns: The Global Economy Stands on 'One Leg', Artificial Intelligence

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that the global economy "may test the limits of its resilience soon," pointing to depleted oil stocks, stretched budgets, and the conflict in the Middle East, as reported by The Guardian from the "World Economic Outlook" report.

The Fund forecasted global economic growth at 3.1% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027, while raising its forecast for UK economic growth in 2026.

The report warned that a sharp drop in AI investment could reduce global GDP by 1.1% by 2028, including a 1.8% decline in US output.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said the global economy "stands on one leg, and that is the leg of artificial intelligence," referring to current growth's reliance on the investment boom in this sector. The report also noted that the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve recently fell to its lowest level since 1982.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Strategic Petroleum Reserve: An emergency stockpile of crude oil maintained by the US government to respond to supply disruptions and crises.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP): The total value of goods and services produced by a country's economy during a period of time, used as a measure of the size of the economy.

World Economic Outlook: A periodic report published by the IMF containing its projections for economic growth and financial conditions.
