India aims to reach a space economy worth $44 billion by 2033, supported by technologies such as reusable launch vehicles, electric propulsion, air-breathing propulsion, and in-orbit docking, according to a government bulletin released on Wednesday.

The bulletin stated that NewSpace India Limited signed 118 technology transfer agreements covering 83 technologies developed by ISRO to Indian industry, boosting the capabilities of local companies.

Cumulative investment in Indian space startups reached approximately $618.5 million as of March 31, 2026, with funding shifting from early seed rounds to larger growth rounds.

The project is backed by the Next Generation Launch Vehicle approved by the government in September 2024 with an allocation of 8,240 crore rupees, boasting a capacity of up to 30 tonnes to low Earth orbit, with a partially reusable version capable of 14 tonnes.

What do these terms mean?

Space Economy: The sum of commercial and scientific activities related to space, from manufacturing rockets and satellites to communication, imaging, and navigation services.

Technology Transfer: A process by which a technology developed at a government or research institution is transferred to a private company for commercial manufacturing and use.

Electric Propulsion: A space propulsion system that uses electricity to accelerate ionized gas instead of burning chemical fuel, offering higher efficiency but lower thrust.
