Volotea Cuts Over 10% of Its Winter Capacity in France

Spanish low-cost airline Volotea has canceled more than 10% of its winter capacity in France due to rising jet fuel prices and financial pressures, leaving passengers searching for alternatives.

The airline, which operates many domestic routes in France and connects medium-sized European cities, said it faces rising kerosene costs and debts of 250 to 300 million euros accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report by BFM TV. Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium showed that the airline removed more than 10% of its capacity between November and February, with Bordeaux recording the largest decline at 35% year-on-year.

Volotea plans to reduce its fleet from 44 aircraft to around 30 to 35, focusing on larger aircraft to improve revenue per seat. Consumer association UFC-Que Choisir criticized the company's handling of cancellations, citing passenger complaints about delayed refunds and poor assistance with alternative travel arrangements.

Under EU rules, airlines must offer a refund within seven days or alternative transportation when flights are canceled. Volotea stated that refunds are processed within seven days and that requests for reimbursement of alternative travel expenses will be examined on a case-by-case basis.
