Meta's New Ad-Destination Rules Threaten Third-Party Campaigns

On October 8, Meta began blocking ads from ByteDance, the owner of the TikTok app, on Facebook and Instagram across seven countries, including Egypt. However, the broader impact of this step is being felt by third-party advertisers with no direct relation to the company, as reports indicate that restrictions extend to campaigns linking to TikTok or other ByteDance assets.

This demonstrates that the dispute between the two platforms is no longer confined to competing for advertisers; it has turned into a battle over the destination users reach after seeing an ad. Many influencer campaigns do not remain within a single platform, relying on TikTok to discover creators and then using Meta's targeting and reach capabilities to extend the campaign to a wider audience.

With the platform becoming stricter regarding ad destinations, advertisers may be forced to separate creative assets, landing pages, and measurement methods for each platform, after previously treating them as interconnected channels. A campaign that used Facebook or Instagram to drive audiences toward TikTok may now require a Meta-owned destination, a neutral website, or a different activation strategy for the same influencer.

This change signals a broader shift, as major platforms show less willingness to serve as neutral distribution layers for one another. They compete for advertisers, creators, and attention, but now they are also competing over outgoing traffic paths from their ecosystems. The decision is particularly significant for advertisers in the Arab region, as Egypt was explicitly named among the seven affected markets.

What do these terms mean?

Third-Party Campaigns: Ads run by an advertiser or agency not affiliated with the platform itself, leading the user to an external destination such as TikTok.

Media Mix: Distributing a campaign's budget and content across multiple channels so that each channel handles a portion of reach and conversion.

Ad Destination: The location a user reaches after clicking an ad, whether it is a store, a landing page, or an account on another platform.
