Britain Injects £165 Million into AI Biosecurity
Britain announced an AI package led by £165 million for biosecurity and £120 million for the AI Safety Institute, as part of the October 28 budget.
British Treasury Minister John Healey announced an AI investment package aimed at deploying technology across various regions and reducing reliance on foreign sources, to be included in the budget scheduled for October 28. The package is headlined by £165 million for a national biosecurity initiative, including £100 million for a new AI biosecurity laboratory.
The government stated that the lab will work on detecting and monitoring biological threats, and that it will receive support of up to £200 million in AI model credits provided by OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside partnerships with Google DeepMind and the British firm Basecamp Research. The package also includes £65 million to strengthen biosurveillance and develop treatments against priority pathogens.
The package allocates an additional £120 million to the AI Safety Institute, and £60 million for the "National Cyber Shield" which will utilize agentic AI to enhance defenses, including a £25 million challenge fund. The government is also establishing a new £70 million national real-time exposure and vulnerability center to identify flaws in critical infrastructure.
On the domestic capabilities front, the government is boosting the "Sovereign AI Fund" with an additional £60 million, the research procurement program with £60 million, and adding £18 million for a new advanced chip design academy. The package also includes £10 million annually to study the impact of AI on jobs, £30 million for local partnerships, in addition to a £15 million challenge prize.
