Oil Spill Closes Beaches in Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, and Sharjah

Ras Al Khaimah announced the closure of all its beaches until further notice following an offshore oil spill, while Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah restricted access to coastal areas, according to The National newspaper.

A satellite image dated October 21 showed oil leaking from a tanker 25 kilometers off the coast of Umm Al Quwain, according to the source.

The size of the oil slick and the extent of its impact on tourism have not yet been confirmed, as assessment and containment operations continue. The northern beaches of the UAE are a popular destination for visitors and residents, making their temporary closure impactful on marine activities.

The tourism sector awaits the results of the environmental assessment to determine the duration of the closure, while authorities continue to assess the situation in affected coastal areas.
