Chevron Confirms Extension of Gas Reservoirs in Nargis-2 Well in Egypt

Chevron and the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced positive results from drilling the Nargis-2 natural gas well in the Mediterranean Sea, after drilling confirmed the extension of previously discovered gas-bearing formations and identified an additional gas layer.

Drilling operations began in May 2026 in cooperation with Chevron's partners and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), with the well depth reaching more than 5,000 meters. Evaluation results revealed gas-bearing formations with a net pay thickness of up to 35 meters, supporting additional technical studies to assess the field's potential.

The Nargis field, discovered in December 2022, is estimated at around 3.5 trillion cubic feet of gas. Chevron operates the field with a 45% stake, alongside Eni through its subsidiary IEOC at 45%, and Tharwa Petroleum at 10%.

The ministry said the results support Egypt's strategy to accelerate the development of undeveloped discoveries and turn discovered resources into recoverable reserves, contributing to boosting domestic natural gas production. Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi had witnessed the start of drilling in May aboard the drillship Stena Forth.

What do these terms mean?

Appraisal well: A well drilled near a previous discovery to determine the reservoir's size and extent before deciding on commercial development.

Net pay thickness: The total thickness of hydrocarbon-bearing layers in a well, used as an indicator of expected gas or oil volume.

Trillion cubic feet: A unit of measurement for natural gas volume, equal to roughly 28.3 billion cubic meters.
