EU Council supports consent exemption for 6 cookie purposes

The Council of the European Union supported granting six specific cookie purposes an exemption from obtaining user consent, as part of an updated text for the ePrivacy Directive, according to PPC Land.

The Permanent Representatives Committee (Coreper) approved a negotiating mandate on October 21, distributed in document 14756/26, which rewrites Article 5(3) of the Directive with a closed list comprising six purposes.

The European Parliament is still required to adopt its own position before trialogue negotiations begin, while member states will have 24 months to transpose the text into their national laws after its adoption.

The list is restricted to six purposes, meaning that any other purpose remains outside this exemption in the proposed text.

What do these terms mean?

Coreper: The Permanent Representatives Committee of the EU member states, responsible for preparing Council decisions and coordinating between capitals.

ePrivacy Directive: A European law regulating privacy in electronic communications, including cookie rules.

Cookies: Small files saved by websites in the browser to remember the user or track their behavior, usually requiring their consent.
