Global Airline Ticket Prices Rise 12.3% Ahead of Winter Season

Global airfares have risen by 12.3% year-on-year, according to an analysis by OAG based on four full weeks of departure data, putting pressure on travelers' budgets ahead of the winter travel season.

The average ticket price reached $448 in September 2026, up from $399 in September 2025, while the October average reached $453, compared to $412 a year earlier. The report attributed the rise to crude oil and jet fuel prices, which account for about 40% of airline operating costs, as crude traded below $90 per barrel in February 2026 before surpassing $200 in April and May, remaining between $185 and $194 throughout most of September and October.

Major Indian airlines raised fuel surcharges this month to 5,500 rupees for flights to Southeast Asia, the Gulf region, the Middle East, and North and East Asia, potentially adding about 22 Omani riyals to the cost of tickets on flights to Oman. Muscat International Airport recorded an 8.2% decrease in both international arrivals and departures during the first nine months of the year.

Marie Owens Thomsen, Senior Vice President for Sustainability and Chief Economist at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said the coming months will reveal whether travelers whose purchasing power has been eroded by high energy prices will adjust their travel budgets or hesitate due to geopolitical instability. Skyscanner advises comparing prices across multiple dates, searching early, setting up price alerts, and not delaying booking if dates are fixed and the price fits the budget.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Jet Fuel: A specialized fuel for aircraft derived from petroleum, accounting for about 40% of airline operating costs, which is why its prices directly affect ticket prices.

Fuel Surcharge: An additional fee added by airlines to ticket prices to offset rising fuel costs.

Dynamic Pricing: A system in which airlines continuously update prices based on remaining seats and sales velocity, meaning prices may change even during the same search session.
