Character.AI Files for Bankruptcy and Sells Assets to Disney for $20 Million
Chatbot platform 'Character.AI' has filed for bankruptcy and agreed to sell assets and a technology license to Disney for $20 million, warning that the platform may shut down if no buyer emerges.

AI conversational platform 'Character.AI' has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S., reporting that its assets and liabilities range between $50 million and $100 million, according to TechCrunch.
The company agreed to sell certain assets and grant a perpetual, non-exclusive technology license to Disney for $20 million, a move reflecting its effort to raise liquidity amid its financial crisis.
The company stated that there is currently no offer to buy its assets, warning that the platform may shut down and be liquidated if no actionable offer emerges.
This step comes five years after launch, following consecutive legal, regulatory, and operational difficulties that impacted its business model and user trust.
What do these terms mean?
Chapter 11: A clause in U.S. bankruptcy law that allows a company to reorganize under court protection instead of immediate liquidation.
Assets and Liabilities: Assets are the funds and property the company owns, while liabilities are the debts and obligations it owes.
Perpetual Non-Exclusive Tech License: An agreement allowing the buyer to use the technology forever without being its sole owner.
Liquidation: Selling off the company's assets and distributing the proceeds to creditors, then terminating its operations.
