Barakah Nuclear Plant Reaches Full Capacity with Operation of Fourth Reactor in the UAE

The UAE has announced the operation of the fourth reactor at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, completing the first facility of its kind in the Arab world with a total capacity of 5.6 gigawatts of clean electricity.

The UAE announced the operation of the fourth and final reactor at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in Abu Dhabi, enabling the plant to produce 5.6 gigawatts of clean electricity in an achievement that makes the UAE the first Arab country to possess an integrated civil nuclear system.

Officials from the nuclear energy regulatory authority (FANR) explained that the plant will serve as a source of clean energy for at least 60 years, and that its carbon emissions rate does not exceed 4 grams per kilowatt-hour compared to 820 grams for coal plants.

South Korea's KEPCO is responsible for operating and maintaining the plant under a long-term contract, while the UAE works to qualify national cadres to manage the plant in the future within the framework of the "Nuclear Cadre Development" program.

Barakah forms a fundamental pillar in the UAE's strategy to diversify energy sources and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, as the country seeks to raise the share of clean energy to 44% of the energy mix by the next decade. Energy experts believe that the UAE's model in civil nuclear energy serves as a reference studied by several Arab countries seeking to acquire peaceful nuclear energy.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Gigawatt: A unit for measuring power capacity equal to one billion watts. 5.6 gigawatts is sufficient to power more than one million homes simultaneously. For comparison: an average gas-fired power plant produces about 0.5 gigawatts.

Carbon Neutrality: A target meaning bringing net carbon emissions to zero, either by reducing or absorbing them. The UAE committed to reaching it by 2050. Nuclear energy helps with this because its carbon emissions are virtually non-existent.

Civil Nuclear Energy: The use of nuclear reaction to generate electricity for peaceful purposes only, which is entirely different from nuclear weapons. It is considered one of the highest energy density and lowest carbon emission sources in the world.
